Music Matters Series: Portuguese Fado with Sonia Bettencourt

  • La Grua Center 32 Water Street Stonington, CT 06378 (map)

Guitarras do Atlantico

   Manuel Leite, guitarra portuguesa
   Viriato Ferreira, viola de fado
   Michael Haffenen, viola baixo

Fado is the folk music of Portuguese urban cafés and the ancient ports. It's a haunting, propulsive, wistful amalgam of Portuguese, Iberian, North African Arab and black, Moorish, Roma, and Atlantic islands roots. This is more than just the music of the Portuguese soul – it has won over the entire world. Fadista Sonia Bettencourt is a compelling, distinctive a voice for this music, as are the three first-rate instrumentalists of Guitarras do Atlantico. A fado afternoon like this is a must!

Once again, we're delighted to collaborate with Stonington's Portuguese Holy Ghost Society to bring you the sensuous, seriously addictive sound of fado.
