Coast Guard Auxiliary safety inspection at the SHYC

Stonington Harbor Yacht Club welcomes all boat owners and operators to ensure their boat is safe and prepared for the summer season by offering a Coast Guard Auxiliary safety inspection at the SHYC docks on June 23rd from 9am-1pm. Stonington Harbor Yacht Club is located at 32 Water Street in Stonington and boats can reach the west facing dock on the starboard side coming into the harbor.  This is a free service of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and vessels meeting all requirements will be awarded certification stickers for the year.  There is no penalty if requirements are not met and owners will be given a list of items required so they can meet the appropriate safety standards.  Vessels passing safety checks are awarded a decal that informs: Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, Sheriff's & Police and other boating law-enforcement & safety agency's that your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws during a safety check for that year. Many boat insurance companies offer discounts for vessels which undergo a Vessel Safety Check. All decals and safety checks are void December 31st of year in which the boat is inspected. They are also void should the operator /owner fail to maintain the vessels equipment or the vessel itself to the standard at the time of the safety check. Items that are checked include: life jackets, registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation, fire extinguishers, distress signals, battery cover and connections. These items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, can result in penalties if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard while you are underway. Register for your time slot by calling 860-535-0112 ext. 103 or emailing office@shyc.us.

SHYC Education Event: Bob Kostyla- Marion to Bermuda Race

Stonington Harbor Yacht Club will host a presentation by Bob Kostyla. Kostyla is a member of the Marion Bermuda Race organizing committee. From 1999 through the 2017 race, he has crewed and skippered in eight Marion Bermuda races and has also done four return sails. He is a sailor and boat owner of 40 years and a longtime member of the Beverly Yacht Club and resident of Marion, MA.

Since the first Marion Bermuda Race in 1977, it has focused on cruising sailors who want to experience the challenge and enjoyment of an offshore race. While boats, methods of navigation, safety requirements and sail technology have changed, the Marion Bermuda Race still stays focused on the cruising sailor. For more information on the history of the Race visit www.marionbermuda.com. The Marion Bermuda Race Committee holds a series of offshore race preparation seminars at yacht clubs from New York to Maine each year. These seminars are approximately 60 minutes in length and present a great overview of what is required to participate in the Marion Bermuda Race. Even if you’re not considering participating in the race in 2019, the seminar still gives you lots of good information and suggestions on creating a well-founded ocean cruising boat

This event is free and open to the public, guests are encouraged to stay for dinner after the presentation. Reservations are requested by calling Tricia Walsh at 860-535-0112 ext. 103 or emailingoffice@shyc.us

Presentation Steven White, President of Mystic Seaport: The Vikings Begin at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

Stonington Harbor Yacht Club will host a presentation by Stephen White, President of the Mystic Seaport Museum. Mr. White will discuss the upcoming exhibit; The Vikings Begin. One of the world’s finest early Viking-age collections is coming to Mystic Seaport. Thematic sections on Viking warfare, trade, the Baltic Sea, a ship burial, Norse gods, and relations to other cultures will employ rare archaeological finds in the discovery of how this maritime society lived more than a millennium ago. This exhibition represents the first instance most of these artifacts will have ever left Sweden.  Cost to attend this event is $5 for members of SHYC and $10 for guests. The Clubhouse will be open for dinner following the presentation. Reservations are requested by calling Tricia Walsh at 860-535-0112 ext. 0 or emailing office@shyc.us

DVD Screening of the Brendan Voyage Educational Event at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

DVD Screening of the Brendan Voyage Educational Event at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

Stonington Harbor Yacht Club will host a screening of the Brendan Voyage with an introduction from John Ackley and discussion following the movie. The Brendan Voyage documents what is described as the greatest epic voyage in modern Irish history. Tim Severin and his companions built a boat using only techniques and materials available in the sixth-century A.D, when St. Brendan was supposed to have sailed to America. The vessel comprised forty-nine ox hides stitched together in a patchwork and stretched over a wooden frame. This leather skin was only a quarter of an inch thick. Yet Severin and his crew sailed Brendan from Brandon Creek in Dingle to Newfoundland, surviving storms and a puncture from pack ice. "The Brendan Voyage" is Tim Severin's dramatic account of their journey. Brilliantly written and impeccably researched, "The Brendan Voyage" is a classic of modern exploration and has been translated into 27 languages. It conveys unforgettably the sensation of being in a small, open boat alone in the vastness of the North Atlantic, visited by inquisitive whales, reaching mist-shrouded landfalls, and receiving a welcome from seafaring folk wherever the crew touched land. Cost to attend this event is $5 for members of SHYC and $10 for guests. The Clubhouse will be open for dinner following the screening and feature Irish themed specials. Reservations are requested by calling Tricia Walsh at 860-535-0112 ext. 0 or emailing office@shyc.us

It allows dissimilar classes of sailboats to be raced against each other. The aim is to cancel out the inherent advantages and disadvantages of each class of boats, so that results reflect crew skill rather than equipment superiority. PHRF is used mainly for larger sailboats (i.e., 7 meters and above).

SHYC Education Event - "Thrash to the Onion Patch"

with John Rousmaniere
hosted by Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

860-535-0112
for tickets and RSVP

$5/members
$10/non-members

The 635-mile ocean race from Newport to Bermuda is widely respected and loved by sailors as one of the most fascinating, historic, and challenging tests that a boat and crew can have. Hundreds of sailors come back every two years for the voyage across the Gulf Stream. Typically, 25% of the 160-plus boats are doing the race for the first time and 40% are from abroad or from west of the Hudson.  The 2016 running of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race will be the 50th since it was founded in 1906. And it will be the 90th anniversary of the partnership between the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

In his illustrated talk, sailing historian and multi-time Bermuda racer John Rousmaniere will tell the lively, at times humorous story of the race, and highlight many of its features-the battle across the Gulf Stream, the glorious landfall at St. David's Head, the famous hospitality of the Bermudians, and the cruise home. After his talk, he and other Bermuda Race veterans on hand will talk and answer questions about entering and preparing for the race.
